Tawa Off Road Riders Club

Tawa, Wellington, New Zealand

Yes thats right, we DO NOT have permission to use the land up off Kiwi Cres!!

I Have just been on the phone with the manager of the land.
He is employed by a group of investors to manage the land & take care of it.
He informed me that he has never given permission for anyone to use the land.
He was going to remove the stuctures & jumps, then charge us for the time & expense to do so.
Now considering that some of the investors are lawyers, its a path that we are keen to avoid.
I told him that we are sorry for the misunderstnding & that we will remove the structures & jumps.
He was happy with that & appreciated the offer, so will allow us to get that done when we can.

Now don't start thinking that this guy is a prick or anything like that, he is a nice guy & was pretty cool about the whole thing. At the end of the day he's just doing his job.

Now I know that this is pretty bad news & alot of people have done alot of work up there to get this far, but there will be other oportunities for us and I will be talking with the council soon about doing stuff elsewhere.

Now we need to get started on moving our stuff, so this mondays dig n ride night will be spent up kiwi pulling stuff down.

There is not much else to say but if you've got questions just ask.

Bugger. Is there a deadline to work towards?

"we DO NOT have permission to use the land up off Kiwi Cres!!" so does that mean no riding what so ever?

I took that to mean we aren't allowed on the land at all. I could be wrong though.

Thats rediculous. How much of the land does this guy control? Aren't there several sections up there?

My guess would be we are still alowed to ride the trail tho. It has been biked/horse riden/run/walked for years without complaint.

Basically all the land from Kiwi cres up to the gate where the big ladder drop is, is all private land. The 4wd track is not even a walk way, its just an access track. Its the same as any other private land, we shouldn't be there.
It is unfortunate, but thats the way it goes.
Just be thankful that we didnt turn up one day to find that all the stuff had been taken away, and that we had to pay for it!

From the conversation I had with the manager, we have a bit of time to get things sorted, but I would still like to clean up as soon as possible.

Is it just the structures or do we have to wipe out the jumps and berms etc as well?

I suppose on the upside, there won't be any more confusion over where the Monday night digs are :-)

I know up to the gate is private land but isn't the lower part owned by another person? I was up there clearing the blackberry at the start of the summer and was talking to a guy who had came to do the same thing and he said he was the owner of the lower section and that aslong as we didn't make the entrance obvious he was fine with us using the lower part of the track.

Well whoever you talked to has either changed his mind or been overruled by others. Either way, there might not be a lot more we can do. :-(

But didn't this guy give you permission? If he gave permission and he wasn't supposed isn't that his problem? I get the no riding from now on part but if I were you I wouldn't be paying a cent!
